Aim of the programme
The Department of Geography Education aims to become a leading centre of excellence in the teaching of, and research in Geography in the country and Africa.
The objectives of the programme are to:
a. Initiate and offer relevant courses in the various fields of geography in order to prepare its students for the challenges of the classroom and industry.
b. Equip students to effectively teach Geography at the pre tertiary level
c. Generate textbooks, teaching and learning materials on the subject to meet the growing needs of the various levels of education in the country.
d. Conduct timely and relevant research in order to promote scholarship in the subject in the country.
e. Offer ancillary services to communities outside the University by way of research, consultancy and advice.
1) Students’ admission, progression and graduation:
The entry requirements to the Department of Geography Education shall be based on the general minimum requirements demanded by the University of Education, Winneba as well as special departmental requirements. These are:
a) Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) and West African
Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
The general requirement for admission of WASSCE and SSSCE candidates to first degree programmes are three (3) credit passes in three core subjects and three (3) credit passes in three relevant elective subjects.
i. SSSCE Candidates: Grade D or better in three core subjects (English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and three relevant elective subjects i.e. Geography, Economics, Elective Mathematics, Government and History).
ii. WASSCE Candidates: Grade C or better in three core subjects (English Language Core Mathematics, Integrated science or Social Studies and three (3) relevant elective subjects i.e. Geography, Economics, Elective Mathematics, Government and History.
b) General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates
Passes in three (3) relevant subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). i.e. Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Government, History, and Religious Studies. Also the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an arts subject for Science students.
Special Departmental requirements:
Category A: Applicants intending to study Geography must have taken Geography and obtained a grade of at least C4 in WASSCE or its equivalent.
Category B: Mature Applicants: Applicants must be at least 25 years by 1st September of the academic year in which the applicant intends to enroll on the programme. They must also hold a Teacher’s Certificate A. The applicants must also pass both the general University of Education,Winneba and Departmental Entrance Examinations.
Graduates of the B.A. Geography Education programme can work as staff of GES (as teachers and administrators), Private Educational Institutions, Public/Civil Servants, Researchers and Administrators for NGO’s and Community Based Organisations & Social Workers.
