People often say they 'hate' themselves, or confess to self-loathing. If this is possible then surely the opposite must be too. However, to love oneself is not the same as to 'fall in love'. The intensity of passion associated with falling in love would be very strange indeed if directed inwardly. This behaviour is probably chemically driven and has been shaped by human evolution as a prelude to pair-bonding and mating, or in other words there needs to be someone else involved.
