About National Lottery Authority
National lottery Authority (NLA) is a key government revenue generation entity established by an act of parliament (Act 722) in 2006.It metamorphosed from the Department of National Lotteries; the then institution mandated by National Lotto Act 1958 to operate lottery business on behalf of Government of Ghana until 2007. The lottery amendment act of 1989 (PNDC-Law233), which mandated private operation of lottery in Ghana failed to achieve its set objectives of paying taxes to Government and contributing a percentage of their profits to the District Assemblies of which they were licensed to operate within; and thus the State losing considerable amount of revenue over the period.

The rippling effects necessitated the creation of one body, National Lottery Authority (NLA) to operate Lottery in Ghana, thus promulgating Act 722 which is vested with the power to regulate, supervise, conduct and manage National lotto and to provide for related matters in Ghana. This enactment of the law is also to conform to international best practices where Gaming or Lotto Regulations are the preserve of the State.

Objects of National Lotto
The National Lotto Act (722) has since outlawed Lottery in an effort to streamline and regulate such activities of the lottery business to;

raise revenue for the Nation
 provide as part of its operations of National Lotto, a lottery with the object of providing care and protection for the physically or mentally afflicted, the needy, the aged, orphans and destitute children.

Operational Structures
The organization currently operates under a Governing Board, a Directorate, Management and staff with regional/district offices nationwide.

The NLA has been mandated under Act 722 of 2006 to licence as many Lotto Marketing Companies (LMCs) as possible to sell/retail its products across the country who will be a paid commission rate on products they manage to retail determined by the Governing Board of the Authority.

This provision in the Law will embrace or offer an opportunity to all operatives of private lottery in the past and others to be part of NLA to curtail the incidence of unemployment and also to expand the marketing networks of NLA’s products.
